A Pollinator Garden: Designing for Education
Landscape Elements LLC was contracted by Gail Ahlers of The Empowerment Factory, to design a small pollinator garden for the Baldwin Elementary School in Pawtucket, RI. Ms. Ahlers currently runs a non-profit dedicated to giving youth the skills they need to lead happier, healthier lives. The program focus creativity, self-esteem and civic pride.
The Pollinator Garden is replacing a worn down landscape in the northwest corner of the school’s entrance. The garden (shown on attached plan) is currently under construction and will be completed by September 13th. This is a small design project, but the results will impact a large number of students helping them to learn about the value of pollinators in our environment. And we hope the garden will help bring more pollinators back to an urban area.
According to a 2012 Cornell University study, insect pollinators contributed $29 billion to the US farm economy through their indirect pollination of crops!
