At the New England Medical Innovation Center (NEMIC) our goal is to support innovators and entrepreneurs, bridge “the valley of death”, and expedite the developmental process of medical devices in order for ideas to realize commercial success and provide value to the patients they serve.
We utilize a human-centered design approach and advise our clients to do the same. Human-centered design is a process that starts with the people you’re designing for and ends with new solutions that are tailor made to suit their needs, with many steps in between.
We invite you to join us at our brand new innovation center in the heart of Providence’s innovation district, to learn about the human-centered design process and how we are integrating into healthcare, medical devices, products, and solutions. Join co-founder Aidan Petrie as he explores the current trends, problems, and opportunities for designers in the healthcare field.

In his role as Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Emeritus for Ximedica, Aidan helped drive innovation in medical device development, digital product, healthcare services and systems. As a co-founder of NEMIC he wanted to create a service for Med Tech entrepreneurs to easily accelerate the commercialization process of their products into fundable and sustainable solutions.
With over 25 years of experience, Aidan’s focus is on building a robust but nimble product development process within a regulated industry with a particular eye to user-centered design, innovation and guiding start-ups to success.
Aidan teaches Design Leadership at Rhode Island School of Design and is on the Board of Coastal Medical. He received his degree from Central St. Martins (UK) in Product Design/Engineering and a Masters in Industrial Design from RISD.
