DESIGNxRI welcomes more new members to the community!
We are excited to announce our newest members of the DESIGNxRI community! Recently joining the board is Philip Hawthorne, Creative Director of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, and Deborah McDonough, VP of Marketing at Bradford Soap Works Inc. In February, we welcomed a new DxRI staff: Carolina Clark as Operations Manager. Learn more about our newest members below.
Philip is the Creative Director at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island, part of the brand and communications team helping evolve the organization into a consumer-centric health insurance environment, post ACA. That mission (and the related communication design challenges) continues to shift with the ongoing uncertainties underlying the health insurance marketplace.
Before entering the health insurance sector, Philip spent a number of years in corporate and technology marketing. He was COO of Executive Consulting Services, a strategic design and marketing consultancy focused on the growth of early stage technology companies. He spent 11 years growing with, and then running, the in-house creative agency at American Power Conversion Corporation (now Schneider Electric), a Fortune 1000 technology company. His early career was in the photography, film and publishing fields in South Africa and New York City.
Philip was a founding board member of the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) Rhode Island chapter in 2004, returning to the board as President in 2010 to re-focus the chapter’s mission. In that role, he helped found Clambake, and was part of the group that established the DESIGNxRI nucleus as an outcome of the Rhode Island Foundation “Make It Happen” Initiative.
Deb McDonough is a multifaceted marketing professional with 25 years experience creating, directing and implementing effective product strategy and marketing programs across various industries including personal care, jewelry, toys, and high tech. She is currently Vice President of Marketing for Bradford Soap Works Inc, a company that co-develops and manufactures a majority of the bar soap brands in the US market. Her responsibilities include new product development, product positioning, market research, corporate branding and communication.
Prior to joining Bradford in 2011, Deb had her own consulting business focused on product development and marketing for the jewelry & fashion industries. She worked with top-tier jewelry and accessory brands to help develop products for accounts including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Brooks Brothers among others. Within her business, she conducted market research to identify areas of opportunity, led design direction, and worked as a liaison between factories and brands. Additionally, Deb was a founding employee of toysmart.com, an online toy retailer that received venture capital funding and was later acquired by Disney.
She has a BA from Boston University and an MBA from Boston College.
Deb has been an integral partner to DxRI in the past two years, helping to establish the DxRI Certified initiative and running the pilot in collaboration with Bradford Soap Works. We are happy to have her officially on board!
With a background in fashion, music, and nonprofit, Carolina brings over 15 years of business development and community building experience to the DxRI team. Carolina most recently served as the Director for Prevention Programs for Day One - a nonprofit in Los Angeles County where she was responsible for providing programming to support healthy communities through education, youth empowerment, and advocacy work. Having recently returned to New England, Carolina is excited to be able to continue to make meaningful change by working alongside the design community as DxRI’s Operations Manager.
