Youth City Workshop: Designing the Future of Our Communities

design x RI's tenth anniversary banner image

Calling all youth artists + designers ages 10-14 years old interested in learning more about buildings, city planning, design, and architecture in our city! Learn about architectural concepts, sketching, drawing, modeling, and local architects + designers working, creating, and engaging with our communities. This workshop will engage with design as a tool for navigating our ability to create change in our communities that reflects who our community is and what it aspires to become.

Meet the Speakers

Sophia Francesco

Sophia Francesco recently graduated from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) and double minors in Nature, Culture, Sustainability Studies (NCSS) + History, Philosophy, and the Social Sciences (HPSS) in Gender, Sexuality, and Race. Sophia believes that design has the potential to inspire discovery, provoke inquiry, encourage healing, and create dialogue at various scales. She believes in the power of collaboration and active participation of all individuals to form stronger collective care within a design practice.

She has worked with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, Navajo Nation Department of Community Development (CPMD), Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and James A. Michener Art Museum. Sophia hopes to continue working with organizations that intentionally center on an interdisciplinary team of designers, artists, activists, and organizers addressing the complexities of the world around them.
