Join the DxRI Board!
We’re looking for thoughtful, engaged leaders to join our board and help guide DxRI’s next chapter. As a board member, you’ll help shape our strategic direction, keep an eye on the big-picture financials, and support the continued growth of Rhode Island’s design community.
We’re especially excited to connect with folks who bring leadership experience, a collaborative spirit, and a deep belief in the power of design to build a stronger, more creative Rhode Island.
DxRI BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The DESIGNxRI Board of Directors is composed of enthusiastic designers, business professionals, supporters, and connectors. Members bring diverse lived experiences and represent a wide range of geographic regions and sectors within the creative and design industries.
Together with DxRI’s staff and consultants, the Board provides leadership to ensure the organization achieves its mission. It is also legally and morally accountable for the health and vitality of the organization.
Becoming a DxRI Board Member
Board Member Expectations
Members of the DESIGNxRI Board of Directors are champions and stewards of the organization’s mission. They provide leadership, vision, and governance, and are expected to stay actively informed and engaged. Board members participate in committee work, help advance organizational goals, and represent DxRI within their networks and communities.
Members are also expected to make an annual personal donation at a level that is meaningful to them and actively support organizational fundraising efforts. This includes leveraging personal contacts, promoting DxRI through social media and community networks, securing sponsorships, and inviting others to engage with the organization through events or committee service.
Board Member Responsibilities:
- Articulate mission, goals, and values; establish policies and procedures to function successfully.
- Ensure programs, operations, and activities are relevant to the mission, goals, and values; consistently evaluate for effectiveness and guide appropriate adjustments.
- Ensure a balance among the board of diverse design sectors represented.
- Remain unbiased towards a particular business/firm’s goals relative to the function of the larger organization.
- Financial stewardship; review and approve the annual budget; ensure business model empowers the organization and maintains health and vitality; govern appropriate fundraising efforts and membership/sponsorship development to ensure a healthy fiscal environment.
- Ensure the continuity of the Board through development and recruitment; implement proper procedures of election, orientation, and mentorship.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
- Protect assets of the organization and ensure appropriate measures are in place.
- Provide strategic thought and perspective that guides DESIGNxRI toward maintaining a healthy, relevant, and prosperous place in the State of RI.
- Make an annual personal donation at a level that is personally meaningful, and actively support the organization’s fundraising efforts.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Engage Rhode Island designers and provide a structure that connects them.
- Cultivate relationships with design community leaders at state and local/town/city levels.
- Internal and External Promotion of DxRI’s Events through internal and external networks, including but not limited to social media, social clubs, places of work, etc.
- Potentially organize events for the design community via committee work.
- Sit on a regularly occurring DxRI committee, which meets either monthly or bi-weekly.
Board Member Qualifications:
- Proven track record in an executive leadership role.
- Previous board experience preferred.
- Knowledge of the organization and the design industry.
- Sufficient time availability for board duties.
- Strong diplomatic and interpersonal skills.
Board Meeting Schedule
Board Meetings occur on the first Monday of every month from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
Board meeting calendar invitations will be sent to each new board member by the Executive Director upon onboarding. Board members who take on leadership roles such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Committee Chairs will be required to meet each month with their committee and provide monthly reports at full monthly board meetings.
