The DxRI Dispatch
The DxRI Dispatch is a place for deeper conversations about design in Rhode Island. Here, DxRI staff share long-form interviews and thoughtful articles that highlight the people, practices, and perspectives shaping our creative community. These stories extend beyond what we can share in our newsletter, inviting readers to slow down, listen closely, and learn more.

We’re shining a light, literally, on Nick McKnight, owner of Night Light Neon in Providence and a 2024 alum of the Design Catalyst Program. Nick has dedicated his career to keeping the craft of neon alive, transforming this historic medium into contemporary art, signage, and experiential lighting for interior spaces.

DESIGNxRI recently sat down with Matt Smith, owner of Receptor Creative Agency, which is a collaborative, client-centered design studio that emphasizes connection, understanding, and thoughtful problem-solving. We talk about what it’s like to own a design business, Matt’s design history, design in the age of AI, and get a sneak peek at a few of his current projects.

DESIGNxRI is offering two desks in our bright, shared office space for sublet. We’re seeking a like-minded designer, creative professional, or small nonprofit interested in working within a collaborative, design-forward environment.

DxRI recently sat down with Pierson W. Booher, AIA, and Tami Hughes of DBVW Architects to explore how their firm approaches the delicate balance between historic preservation and contemporary design.
