The Lost and Future Art is a process-oriented open studio event hosted by KITE Architects that explores the evolution of architectural model making. Drawing from KITE’s 50-year archive, the event highlights how physical models have long served as essential tools for design thinking, communication, and craft. Visitors will view historic models from the firm’s legacy alongside recent projects, and learn traditional hand-crafted model making techniques. Demonstrations of laser cutting and digital models experienced through virtual reality will showcase how emerging technologies are reshaping architectural practice.
General Event Timeline
The event will begin with a brief welcome and introduction to KITE’s history of model making. Guests will explore a curated display of archival and contemporary models spanning five decades of work, and will visit multiple stations throughout the studio where KITE’s architects will lead live demonstrations of traditional hand-cut model building alongside newer digital fabrication techniques such as laser cutting. An interactive VR station will allow visitors to experience how models are now translated into immersive spatial tools to communicate design to clients and stakeholders. The event concludes with informal discussion and networking within the studio.
Public Engagement
The event engages the public through an open-studio format that invites visitors directly into KITE’s working environment. Guests can closely examine models from across the firm’s history, observe demonstrations of both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary fabrication technologies, and experience projects through virtual reality. By revealing the process behind architectural design, from hand-cut materials to advanced digital tools, the event makes the practice of architecture accessible and encourages dialogue about how design methods have evolved and where they are heading in the future.
