NAMU is a Providence-based textile and art studio founded by designer/artist Jungil Hong. The studio designs conscientious hand-worked wares, from garment to home goods to art collectibles. Products are produced through small batch handmade textiles with a focus on collaboration and the environment. NAMU focuses on ethical manufacturing and textile innovation. The outcome, which facilitates a diverse range of artists and makers, are distinctive objects/heirlooms that inspire intergenerational conversations and exchanges.
NAMU endeavors to pursue the use of natural materials to facilitate a sustainable environmental model with a focus on merging art and design. My hope is that NAMU will eventually be able to reach beyond its current communities of support through its high-concept designs and experimental collaborations. In a moment when the world is enduring a range of crises’, NAMU envisions itself as a brand that supports slowing down and contributing to conversations around sustainability and diversity. NAMU wishes to create a model based on an ethical exchange: this can happen through workshops, more affordable DIY clothing kits, creating transparent models of production and finding ways to include an audience beyond solely a one-sided consumer model. At the end of the day, NAMU aspires to create timeless work that transcends the moment that it is made.
