Designing Inclusivity at Brown’s new LGBTQ+ Center with KITE Architects

What does it mean to make an LGBTQ+ Center? At Brown University, KITE Architect’s approach to human-centered design points the way and takes into consideration the sensibilities needed in order to create an inclusive space where support, mentorship, and community are promoted.

Brown University’s new LGBTQ Center space designed by KITE will become a home away from home for all students, but especially those who seek refuge in the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights.

KITE Architects is proud to be engaged in the dialogue of inclusive, human-centered design for all. Join us for an end of construction tour and discussion and be the first to see how the renovations of one of the oldest houses in Providence has been transformed into a place for people to connect and be welcome!

Christine M. West

As a Principal and co-owner of KITE Architects, Christine’s commitment to positive community impact is a guiding value of the firm and is reflected both in their work and in her numerous civic and volunteer roles. Her career as an architect has focused on effective management and technical excellence that is critical for effective design.

Christine’s appreciation for KITE’s creative approach brought her to Providence in 2003 to join the firm that she has co-owned since 2008, and is a value that drives the team to this day. After working as an architect for nearly a decade in the Washington, D.C. area, Christine completed post-professional graduate work at Harvard that focused on management and development issues related to sustainable building.

Committed to serving the community beyond her work with KITE, Christine is heavily involved in a number of civic boards and nonprofit organizations. She was Chair of the Providence City Plan Commission from 2012 until 2022 and is the Architect member of the Providence Building Board. Nationally, Christine has served as a Chair of National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) teams responsible for the accreditation of professional schools of architecture in the United States and abroad for over 25 years.
