The RI Design Hall of Fame recognizes proven leaders in the Rhode Island design community. Showcasing the unique contributions of RI designers on a local, national, and international level, the RI Design Hall of Fame elevates the legends and the next generation of amazing. Honorees for Lifetime Achievement and Emerging Designer are nominated by the community and voted on by a committee of peers, then spotlighted and celebrated every year as part of DESIGN WEEK RI. 2022 LIFEtime achievement awardees

Khipra Nichols
With over 30 years as a practicing Industrial Designer, Khipra Nichols, has an impressive and vast portfolio. Currently, he is the department head of the Industrial Design Department at RISD and teaches at both Brown and RISD. Recently, Khipra partnered with professors at Brown University and started a RISD Brown University Masters in Design and Engineering dual degree program.

Paul Sproll
Paul Sproll is dedicated to the development of progressive practices in art and design by teaching and learning in K-12 schools and community-based settings. He founded and directed(till 2022), Project Open Door which provides teens attending Rhode Island’s urban core public high schools with access to high-quality studio-based learning opportunities. Sproll is a regular presenter at national forums on art and design education and frequently serves as a curriculum consultant and adviser.

Martha Werenfels
Martha is a nationally-recognized expert in the field of historic preservation. She has directed multiple phases of important preservation projects at some of the region’s most treasured landmark buildings. As an advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Martha served on a national Sustainability Task Force focused on strengthening the important relationship between sustainability and historic preservation. Martha serves on the boards of GrowSmart RI and the Historic Preservation Education Foundation. She is a Governor-appointed member of the Capital Center Commission, a member of the RIHPHC review board, and a past-President of AIA/Rhode Island.
2022 EMERGING DESIGNER AWARDEES

Rachel Rosenkrantz
Rachel Rosenkrantz is the owner and Master Luthier at Atelier Rosenkrantz, a unique stringed instruments company with a strong focus on sustainability and, in particular biomaterials. Rachel teaches within the Division of Experimental and Foundation Studies at RISD. As with her music and design, Rosenkrantz uses luthiery to combine the traditional and the new, exploring new techniques while bringing a unique perspective to a traditional idiom.

Aaron Horowitz
Aaron Horowitz is founder of Sproutel and helped found Design for America (DFA). Horowitz works to improve the lives of children growing up with an illness. Over the past decade his products have reached over 100,000 children around the world.
