Shedding Some Light
Newcomers will discover the vast world of specialty paper at Paper Connection, while acquiring some fresh ideas for covering lampshades.
Taking her inspiration from vintage, Victorian lampshades, local artist Sarah Dunn will demonstrate each of the intricate steps involved in breathing new life into thrifted lampshades. Instead of using traditional fabric, Sarah will teach you how to use handmade papers from Asia; how to layer, pleat, and fold paper for a variety of techniques and appliques.
Founder and director of Paper Connection, Lauren Pearlman Sugita, will further your appreciation for these stunning papers by walking you through the history and process of hand papermaking.
By the end of this event, not only will you walk away with the knowledge of how to create your own unique lampshades, but with a new understanding for the centuries-old art form of paper made by hand.
Lauren Pearlman Sugita
Lauren Pearlman Sugita has been a paper researcher, provider, maker and educator for more than 30 years. In 1995, she founded Paper Connection International, LLC, a Providence-based importer and distributor of specialty art papers. Paper Connection has become an essential paper resource in North America- stocking hand-crafted papers made from mainly sustainable fibers.
Through long experience working with paper, Lauren and her expert staff assist artists, designers and manufacturers with finding a paper match for a diverse range of projects. Paper Connection remains committed to ensure the art of handmade paper is preserved for future generations.
Over the years, Lauren has designed her own patterned papers, facilitated papermaking events, workshops, presented at various schools, and art organizations, and written articles for print and online publications.
Before entering the business world of paper, Lauren lived in Japan for 4 years, where her love for paper was infused in daily life. Upon returning from Japan, in the early 1990’s, Lauren became art director at a Boston-based , international trading company, where she maintained and marketed a collection of photographs, antique wooden chests, imari-ware, ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) and washi-(Japanese paper).
In 2019, Lauren completed the RI Cohort 8 of the Goldman Sachs 10KSB Program.
In 2020, she exhibited her own artwork at Galerie Le Domaine in Providence, RI.
In July, 2022, Lauren curated a group show of paper artists- including herself- which opened at the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative.
Sarah Dunn
Sarah Dunn is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in printmaking, bookmaking, painting, and textiles. Her work often explores the trauma she has endured as a biracial woman, a daughter of an immigrant, and a victim/survivor of abuse and documents her process of healing. She has found joy, comfort and relief in the process of refurbishing thrifted lamps with handmade papers. These lamps have served as light escape from the otherwise heavy work she frequently creates.
